The beginning of Sasha's story is not the most glamorous, she was brought into the rescue because she was pregnant and the owners no longer wanted her. When she arrived, all I remember thinking was "another mostly black cat, she'll be hard to get adopted..." You see, Sasha was not ever one to want any human interaction, even more so when she had her kittens. She would allow you to pet her, but she was never one to seek out the attention.
None the less as her kittens grew they developed their own spunky personalities, and we took 2 of them in as our fosters (Bailey & Marlin, see below).
Marlin here was already pending adoption when we got him in our care, and it didn't take long to figure out why. This little guy was full of personality, and never ever turned down a cuddle.
Bailey however wasn't getting any interest until the day that she climbed next to the food bag and sat there, looking like a mirror image of the cat on the cat food bad (only cuter). I snapped a photo, shared it, and within days she was adopted.
Looks like his mom, no?!
Once the two rascals were off to their furever homes, Jake and I went to the rescue to pick our next foster. We usually picked kittens, because Midnight just loved having the company, but for some reason Jake suggested we take Sasha. His reasoning was that perhaps she just needed a home environment in order to develop her personality, and if anyone could help her it would be us; so she came with us that night!
Her first night with us, I let her out of the kennel in our living room and she took off and hid right behind the washing machine. It was 3 days before I even caught a glimpse of her, and when I did I could never get close enough. Once I was able to get her out from behind the couch, I blocked off her hiding spot which resulted in her hiding under our bed.
Slowly but surely she started to come out, but she would always run away if we got too close, or if we walked too fast around her. My heart was so sad because I kept blaming myself for not being able to help her out of her shell.
Notice how short her hair is!!!!
The first night she actually jumped on the bed with us! I was so happy, and we both basked in the fact that she trusted us enough to hang out with us. The cuddle session didn't last too long, I sneezed and that was the end of that, but it was still a special night.
As the weeks went on, we brought her to adoption events, but she would hide and no one ever wanted to give her a chance. I always felt so bad because she would resort back into her shell after the events, but I just wanted her to find the home that she deserved.
This photo was taken the day before the last adoption event she ever went to- I was happy to see her hair coming in nice and thick and she seemed to be gaining some confidence. Unfortunately, after the event she resorted back underneath the bed, and refused to come out.
I was so upset, I kept saying to Jake I wish someone would just give her a chance, if only they could see the funny cat emerging that we get to see everyday.
To my surprise, he said "why don't we just keep her? She fits in well, she's a good cat, and I don't really want her to go anywhere."
The text was sent to Megan, we paid her adoption fee, and she officially joined our family on March 2!
Weeks went on, and her fur continued to grow! Our cat was developing into this long haired beauty, we couldn't believe our eyes!
Check our her transformation from day 1 all the way until 6 months after we got her.
Amazing what food and love does to an animal!
After we officially adopted my house cow, her personality started to emerge, and it still is to this day! Anyone who has met her has asked if they can take her home, has taken a photo, or has laughed at something she has done.
I like to pretend this is the excited face she made when I told her she was staying, but I'm pretty sure this was during one of her crazy moods.
Today, this cat greets every visitor, she watches movies tucked in, she yells at me if I don't feed her fast enough, she jumps up just to get some love, and she makes our lives that much brighter every day. I'm not sure why Jake made the switch to foster her, but I'm glad he did. I couldn't imagine life without our house cow, and she is loved by everyone she meets.
